Summer Safety Tips

Summer safety tips - How can I help?

Did you know seniors are prone to heat-related issues due to reduced sweating and altered fat distribution, which makes temperature regulation less effective as we age?

Taking care of older adults during the summer months takes on a different level of responsibility. Below are some essential tips to help seniors stay healthy and comfortable when it's scorching hot outside. Remember, small steps can make a big difference in keeping our beloved seniors safe and comfortable during the summer season.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if you're not thirsty.
  • Stay cool by staying in air-conditioned or cool places that are away from the sun.
  • Dress appropriately by wearing light clothing.
  • Reduce strenuous activities with high temperatures.
  • Be an early bird or a night owl.
  • Watch for heat stroke.
  • Review your medications.
  • Protect your eyes from the sun.
Can I help my aging family member be safe during the summer? Yes, you can! Visit more frequently, such as twice per day if possible. When you are with them, ask these questions:
  • Are they drinking enough water? Don't wait until they are thirsty to encourage them to drink water.
  • Do they have access to air conditioning? Do not rely on a fan only.
  • Do they know how to keep cool?
  • Do they show any signs of heat stress?
  • Encourage them to take cool showers or baths.
  • Is their clothing appropriate for the weather? Are they loose and light-colored?
  • Help them limit their exposure to the sun.
